Ok, this was challenging, but let's add some fun new elements that should increase the fun. We are heading up a road when it suddenly comes to a gated area that provides entrance and exit points that are too small for the car. A small dodgy looking car passes through and stops right next to us. Three rough looking guys that are between five then and six foot two all hop out and start moving toward the car. My "spider-sense" goes off and I tell Steve to bolt. He legs it into reverse and flips the car around. The guys hop back into their car and start to follow us in their small car. Now, please remember, we are on a road covered in speed bumps every one hundred meters. Steve's car has a clearance of about three inches and it has been bottoming-out on almost every speed bump. We start flying down the street to avoid this aggressive car that is following us. I wish I could describe the sound more elegantly. The Porsche sounds like a F16 when it take off. VRRROOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMM. We reach 70 in about 4 seconds and then slam on the brakes. PSSSTTTCHICCCCKKKKKKKKK. The car bottoms out as we head over a speed bump. This is repeated for about 3 minutes as we eventually evade the car chasing us. Adreneline is pumping... We're still trying to get out of Brixton. We are at a light. Some guy runs at the car on the passenger side with his hand in his pocket and something protruding through his jumper. Yet again, we leg it, this time through a red light. We're not impressed.

As we're trying to get out of Brixton we see a police roadblock. For the first time in Gumball history we, excitedly, drive INTO the roadblock intentionally pissing them off. "We're not supposed to be here" we say. He agrees without further comment other then telling us our nav system is crap. He gives us advice and we finally make it out of Brixton with great trepidation.

  • Just witnessed the stupidity of this "race" first hand as I was in Laguna Beach, California and the Gumball 3000 cars sped through the congested streets weaving in and out of traffic and pedestrians were forced back from the crosswalks and drivers who were not in the race were flipped off and endangered also. The team consisted of a Rolls Royce and two other vehicles that appeared to be chase/film cars, with racoon.co.uk on the cars. There were also some obscene bumper stickers. This was on Saturday, August 10, 2008 at about 12:15 PM during the Laguna Festival of the Arts. The very busy street (Pacific Coast Highway) was turned into a very dangerous place to be. No the cars were NOT obeying the speed laws or the pedestrian right of way at intersections. It was the heads up of the other drivers and pedestrians that prevented tragedy.
I would hope that this "race" would be stopped before more lives are taken away by these self centered irresponsible thoughtless people.
